Jury selection begins in capital murder trial

GREENVILLE — The jury selection process began Wednesday in the trial of Micah Crofford Brown, charged with capital murder in connection with the 2011 shooting death of his ex-wife, Caddo Mills school teacher Stella Michelle “Doc” Ray.

Approximately 400 potential jurors were summoned to appear in the 354th District Court for a general voir dire hearing. The prospective jurors were provided with a questionnaire to complete, and several of the individuals were still in the courtroom late Wednesday afternoon.

Interviews with individual jurors are scheduled to begin on April 1 and could take several weeks.

A date has not yet been set for the opening arguments and the start of testimony in the case.

Prosecutors have announced they intend to seek death by lethal injection as a punishment for Brown, should he be convicted of capital murder. Brown has pleaded not guilty.

Brown, 33, remains in custody at the Hunt County Jail in lieu of $1.5 million bond. Authorities say Brown has confessed to shooting Ray, 36, of Greenville on the night of July 20, 2011 as the two argued over a custody dispute.
