Relatives of Greenville mayor involved in helicopter crash

GREENVILLE — The father and uncle of Greenville Mayor Steve Reid were involved in a helicopter crash in Stephens County earlier today.

Reid was unable to attend Tuesday's City Council meeting. Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Dailey said it was because Reid was called to the scene of the crash, which involved his father and uncle, and asked those in the Council chamber to offer their prayers.

"The report that we have is that his dad alive, but his uncle did pass away," added Council member Renee Francey at the end of Tuesday's regular agenda.

 

According to a Texas Department of Public Safety news release, the agency  was called to the scene of a helicopter crash today at 1:37 p.m.

The crash occurred in Stephens County, northeast of Caddo and 16 miles east of Breckenridge. James Robert Kelly W/M, 75 years of age, a rancher from East Caddo, Texas was a passenger in the helicopter. He was transported to Stephens Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead by Judge Heatley at 4:08 P.M. The pilot, Stephen Mills Reid W/M, 75 years of age from Aledo, Texas has minor injuries and was not transported. The helicopter is a Hughes Rotocraft OH-6A Turbo Shaft owned by SMR, Venture LLC out of Wilmington Delaware. The pilot advised they were hovering over a stock tank, when control of the helicopter was lost. The helicopter crashed into the water. Texas Highway Patrol Corporal Tim Pitts is reporting the crash.
