GREENVILLE — The Memorial Day weekend started tragically in Greenville, when a young boy died as the result of an accidental shooting Friday morning.

The Greenville Police Department released a statement indicating that the initial investigation into the death of 12-year-old Keshawn Carter Davis showed there was nothing intentional regarding the gunshot reported at a residence in the 3200 block of Henderson Street at approximately 10:45 a.m. Friday.

The first officer arrived on the scene in about one minute.

Davis, a student at the Greenville Independent School District Sixth Grade Center, was transported to Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville where he was later pronounced dead.

Students in the Greenville ISD were not in school Friday.

“By all accounts, there were no adults present when the shooting occurred,” said Greenville Police Chief Daniel Busken. “Five children, ages 4, 9 and three 12-year-olds, were the only people in the home at the time of the shooting”.

Busken said Child Protective Services was called to the scene and is involved in the investigation.

As of Friday evening, the events that led up to the shooting, and how the children came into possession of the firearm, were still under investigation.
