A&M-C Planetarium holding open house May 21

In celebration of the International Year of Astronomy, the Texas A&M University-Commerce Planetarium is hosting its second open house at the new observatory from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, weather permitting.

"At the first open house on April 2, we had a few brave people battle the Texas winds and cool temperatures to find their way to the observatory," Assistant Director Cheri Davis said.

By the end of the evening, 70 guests had signed the register and for many it was the first time they had gazed through a telescope. "Many of the guests were in awe at the sight of Saturn and surprised by seeing Saturn's rings and a couple of moons," Davis said.

If the weather is overcast, the open house will be cancelled. The open house is free and anyone can attend.

"The weather is getting warmer and as we get nearer to the summer, there are new objects to see," she said. "Come gaze through the telescopes at the celestial wonders and see for yourself what can be found in the night sky."

The observatory is located five miles south of Commerce. From Highway 50, turn east on County Road 4208. Travel on this road for approximately half a mile and the observatory will be on the left.

The planetarium and observatory have many events scheduled for public participation in the International Years of Astronomy, marking the 400-year anniversary since Galileo first turned his telescope to the night sky.
