Hartline named second-team all-conference
THACKERVILLE, Okla. — After finishing in the top 15 in four of the last five tournaments, Texas A&M University-Commerce senior Pinkey Hartline has been named second-team all-Lone Star Conference, league officials announced at the LSC Banquet in Thackerville, Okla.
Hartline tied for first at the Red River Intercollegiate, tied for ninth at the St. Edward’s Invitational and DBU Invitational and closed in a tie for 15th at the Kickingbird Golf Classic. He posted a season-best three-round score of 220 at the DBU Invitational on March 30-31.
He will be looking to defend his LSC tournament title this week at the conference tournament at the WinStar Golf Course in Thackerville.
Teammate and fellow senior Blake Worden garnered conference honors for the third straight season with honorable mention recognition. He notched his best three-round total of the season with a 213 and finished in a tie for third overall at the Kickingbird Golf Classic on April 7.
Central Oklahoma swept the special recognitions after Colby Shrum was named player of the year, Andrew Green was selected freshman of the year and Bronchos head coach Dax Johnston grabbed coach of the year honors.
Junior Danny Jun and sophomore women’s golfer Megan Benites each received LSC all-academic honors after being selected to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Players must carry at least a 3.20 GPA and be at least a sophomore both academically and athletically to be eligible for LSC academic honors.
Wyse is field athlete of the week
Texas A&M University-Commerce senior Lyndon Wyse has been named the Lone Star Conference Co-Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Wyse at last week's David Noble Relays won the triple jump with a career-best leap of 49 feet 5 3/4 inches to set a school record. He eclipsed the previous mark of 49-2 1/2 that was previously held by Tommie Jemmerson in Denton on April 22, 2004.
The mark is also a NCAA provisional mark and is currently the ninth-best mark in Division II.
He also set a season-best in the long jump by four inches with a leap of 22-9 3/4 en route to a third-place finish.
A&M-C track teams set 14 season best marks
WACO — The Texas A&M University-Commerce men's and women's track and field team set 14 season-best marks on Saturday at the Michael Johnson Invitational.
On the men's side, freshman Cody Hughes won the 5,000-meter run collegiate/open in a season-best time of 14:55.06 for a five-second victory over three Tarleton State runners. Joining Hughes with season-best marks in the 5,000-meter run were teammates Gerardo Delafuente (16:02.29) and Logan Kelly (16:31.93).
Two of the marks came from junior Cairo Thornton, who set a pair of season and career-best marks in the 200-meter dash (22.73) and in the 400-meter dash (49.76). The Lions also had three other performers Brad Dotson (49.34), Albert Sinegal (50.55) and Colby Oberle (51.90) set season-best marks.
Sophomore Brandon Womack was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 9:44.02. Anthony Tosie also had a season-best performance in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 24.72. Reigning LSC Co-Field Athlete of the Week senior Lyndon Wyse matched a season-best with a jump of 22-9 3/4 in the long jump.
On the women's side, senior Leslea Traylor in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12.39) and sophomore Makesha Brewer in the 400-meter dash (1:00.78) posted season-best times. In the 200-meter dash, freshman Khadijah Campbell clocked a season-best time of 28.70.
Junior Sunny Henderson was second in the javelin with a NCAA-provisional mark throw of 137-11, just missing a season-best by two inches. Teammate La'Shara Jefferson was third in the discus with a NCAA-provisional mark throw of 147-11.
The next meet for the Lions is the Mean Green Twilight on April 30 at the University of North Texas in Denton.
Worden sets season best mark
THACKERVILLE, Okla. — Texas A&M University-Commerce senior Blake Worden finished the Lone Star Conference Championship with a career-best 10-under 206 (70-68-68), which was good for third place overall at the WinStar Golf Course on Tuesday.
Worden entered the final round tied for fifth, but posted the second-best round of the day with a 68 to move into third, five strokes behind Central Oklahoma’s Colby Shrum. Worden sank 18 birdies throughout the three-day tournament, and was named to the all-tournament team.
Shrum closed with a 201 (69-67-65) after shooting a 65, which was the best round of the tournament. He won the individual title and helped the Bronchos finish second overall with an 835.
Northeastern State claimed the team title for the fourth time in five year after totaling an 825, and was led by Jeff Cox’s 203 (66-68-69) and Sam Powell’s 207 (65-69-73).
Midwestern State followed in third with an 840, Cameron took fourth with an 859 and West Texas A&M ended in fifth with an 864.
A&M-Commerce tallied its best round with a 285 in the third and finished sixth overall with an 866 (291-290-285). Senior Pinkey Hartline, who claimed the individual title last year, shot a 218 and finished in a tie for 27th with teammate Dustin Gideon. Gideon’s 218 (74-72-72) is a career-best.
Junior Eric Westerman totaled a 227 (77-76-74) and took 45th and junior Danny Jun closed with a 228 (76-80-72) and tied for 46th for the Lions.
Joining Worden on the all-tournament team were Shrum, Cox, Powell and Midwestern State's Andruw Ludlow.
Women earn seventh at championship
THACKERVILLE, Okla. — Texas A&M University-Commerce senior Ali Tanner wrapped up the Lone Star Conference Championship with a 156 (80-76) and tied for 18th overall to lead the Lions to seventh at the WinStar Golf Course on Tuesday.
Tarleton State grabbed its second straight conference tournament title after posting a 585. Andrea Lowe paced the TexAnns with a 144, which was good for a second place tie.
Central Oklahoma’s Cassy Knight captured the individual crown with a 143 (71-72) to lead the fourth place Bronchos (613).
Northeastern State finished in second with a 606, followed by West Texas A&M (608) in third and Angelo State in fifth (614).
Senior Jamie Gililland also led the Lions with a 159 (79-80) as she tied for 22nd, junior Heather Pantalion shot a 161 (77-84) and tied for 27th, sophomore Kathleen May closed with a 164 (83-81) and tied for 31st and sophomore Megan Benites tallied a 173 and tied for 40th.
