2 p.m. Tuesday- Texas district adds metal detectors after stabbing

TYLER, Texas (AP) — The Tyler school district is adding metal detectors after a teacher was fatally stabbed in a classroom, allegedly by one of his students.

Superintendent Randy Reid told a community group Monday night that the district ordered three portable metal detectors. One will be used at each of the two high schools.

Special education teacher Todd Henry died last week after he was stabbed at John Tyler High School. A 16-year-old boy suspected in the stabbing is in custody.

After Henry's death, parents and others raised questions about safety on Tyler school district campuses.

Reid said the third metal detector will be used as needed in the district, as will handheld, metal-detecting wands. He says the district is considering other safety improvements.
