Local athletes earn medals at state
Just making it to state in track field in Texas is a really big deal.
These athletes have to finish in the top four at their respective district meets, the top four at area and then the top two at regional, or earn a wild-card spot, to advance to the University Interscholastic League State Track and Field Championships on May 9-10 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
Twelve athletes from the local area advanced to state. Three of them won silver medals with second-place finishes, including Hailey Nelson of Farmersville in the 2A girls high jump (5-5), Kenya Smith from Wolfe City in the Class A Division I high jump (5-4) and J’Kaylee Clark from Farmersville in the 2A girls 400-meter dash (57.27). Smith was also sixth in the long jump at 16-9 3/4.

Kenya Smith, Hailey Nelson, Chloe Wall, J’Kaylee Clark and D’Lance Sharp won medals, while Rains pole vaulter Charlotte Brown won a lot of hearts again with her performance on Friday at the state track and field championships.

With a temperature in the 70s and a cool breeze, the Greenville Lions practiced in nearly ideal conditions on Tuesday’s second day of spring football practice.
“I think it’s going to be even better tomorrow,” said Greenville coach Marvin Sedberry, after putting the Lions through the paces at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.
