Greenville cagers beat Sherman

GREENVILLE —   Maddy Crabtree scored 17 of her game-high 21 points to help the Greenville Lady Lions overtake Sherman 61-53 in District 13-4A girls basketball on Friday night in the Lions Den.

  The Lady Lions trailed 28-23 at halftime but grabbed the lead with a 24-12 advantage in the third quarter and then held off Sherman despite missing a bunch of free throws in the fourth quarter.

  Elizabeth Rutherford also pitched in 14 points and Savannah Himes added nine as the Lady Lions improved to 12-9 for the season and 2-5 in district play. Crabtree also finished with seven rebounds and four assists. Mackenzie Cooper had a big night on the boards with 16 rebounds, plus seven points and six assists.

  “Tremendous effort from everyone,” said Lady Lions coach Lesa Darst. “We had two great practices leading into this game.”

  Darst said the Lady Lions played well in the first half.

  “We just weren’t connecting on our shots. We came out on fire the second half. We mentally stayed in the game until we finished.”

  Breylyn Keys led Sherman with 17 points and Jayzhia Softly added 12 as the Lady Bearcats dropped to 15-10 and 4-3.

  Collen Wilburn fired in 13 points and Dartannon Wilson pumped in 10 to lead the Greenville Lions to a 66-54 win over the Sherman Bearcats Friday at the Lions Den in District 13-4A basketball.

  Marquis Taylor, Brady Mulkey and Jerry Dickeson each added eight points for Greenville, which is now 12-12 overall and 1-4 in district play.

  Sherman falls to 12-14 and 2-3.

  “We played a complete game tonight on both ends of the floor,” said Greenville head coach Marcus Smith. “We never gave up. We never quit. I believe tonight we became a more mentally strong team. We played a great game. Our new slogan is, ‘One game at a time.””

  Slynn Thomrson fired in 13 points to lead the Bearcats, while teammate T.J. Ball added 11.

  LEONARD — A 12-6 advantage in the second quarter helped the Leonard Lady Tigers to a 59-44 District 12-2A win over Caddo Mills on Friday.

  Kimmy Blackburn led the victors with 17 points and Kacie McCarley added 11.

  Hannah Hopkins topped Caddo Mills and all scorers with 21 points.

  LONE OAK — Lone Oak’s Lady Buffs jumped out to a 36-16 halftime lead and then cruised to a 64-30 District 14-2A victory over Grand Saline on Friday night.

  Alyssa Busby led Lone Oak with 18 points and six steals. Sara Richardson finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Alexa Wallen and Ashleigh Dodwell both chipped in 10 points. Dodwell pulled down eight rebounds, as did Kinsey Patton.

  LEONARD — The Leonard Tigers upped their District 12-2A record to 4-1 with an 84-50 win over Caddo Mills on Friday.

  Leonard, now 15-5 for the season, spread the scoring out among Tyler “Turbo” Turner (15), Jacob Redmon (13), Robert Greene (11) and Max Scoggins (10).

  Cory Johnson topped Caddo Mills with 10 points.

  CELESTE — Bland claimed a 52-23 District 15-A win over the Celeste Blue Devils on Friday.

  Chris Brown led the victorious Tigers with 12 points, Thomas Sourber added 11 and Juan Aviles chipped in 10 as Bland improved to 16-4 overall and 5-1 in district play.

  Braden Morrow led Celeste with eight points.

  EMORY — Rains pulled out a 58-57 home win over the Quinlan Ford Panthers on Friday.

Devonte Pryor paced Rains with 17 points, while Jesse Oswalt fired in 13, Jacob Dowty added 11 and  Erik Jackson scored 10.

  Blake Davenport led Ford and all scorers with 21 points, while Kaden Wallace pumped in 13 and Devin Lewis added 10.
