GREENVILLE —   Accurate spare shooting helped Mike Scroggins win his 39th PBA regional title on Sunday.

Scroggins converted eight of nine spares to beat Andy Patterson, 178-174, in the championship game of the 2013 PBA Southwest Region bowling tournament at Shenaniganz in Greenville. Scroggins won despite throwing only one strike in the final game.

“That pair (lanes 7-8) was a little tough,” he said. “We both struggled on it...Sometimes that happens.”

The left-hander from Amarillo averaged 221.8 for 18 games to lead both days of the tournament. He struck nine times in the round of four game, beating David Anthony, 226-200, to advance to the finals.

Patterson, who is a lefty from Tyler, struck on his last seven shots to win his round of four match, 221-181, over defending tournament champion Nathan Bohr of Wichita, Kan.

Patterson struck in three of the first five frames to grab the early lead in the championship game but left the door open after failing to convert back-to-back splits in frames seven and eight.

“It played pretty tight down the lane,” said Patterson. “I made a couple of bad shots.”

Scroggins overcame Plantar fasciitis on his left foot to pocket the winner’s check of $2,500. He wore a tennis shoe on the left foot, rather than a bowling shoe, for more support.

“When I bowl a lot of games it gets a little fatigued,” he said.

Shayne Wilson of Caddo Mills led the local bowlers in the tournament, finishing eighth after averaging 205.

Wilson lost to Bohr in the round of eight, 191-174 and 223-211.

“I had a good showing,” said Wilson. “He (Bohr) just qualified for Team USA. He bowls for a living.     Hard to beat someone like that.”
