GREENVILLE —   Greenville Christian School coach David Wombaker got three different looks at the Eagles in six-man football scrimmage action on Saturday at Eagle Field.

Fannindel outscored the Eagles 2-1 in the first scrimmage. GCS scored three unanswered touchdowns against Dallas Fairhill and then Fruitvale scored the only touchdown in the third GCS scrimmage.

“We’re a better open-field tackling team than we were last year,” said Wombaker after the scrimmage. “When we block well, you move the ball. When you don’t block, you move the ball backwards. We gave up some sacks.”

Joe Henderson scored the only GCS touchdown against Fannindel on a 30-yard pass from Morgan Henry. Luke Johnson converted the conversion kick.

Quarterback/spreadback Will Martens got the GCS offense off to a quick start against Fairhill with a 55-yard touchdown run. Henry converted the kick.

Martens then passed 30 yards to a touchdown to GCS senior Tristan Wooten. Henry converted the kick.

Wooten capped scoring for GCS against Fairhill with a 15-yard run. The kick failed.

Fairhill is playing its first season of football, according to Wombaker.

Martens and Henry led the GCS defense in the three scrimmages with interceptions.

Wombaker said the Eagles are improving as they prepare for the 2013 season.

“They’re working hard in practice,” he said. “They’re paying attention to the details in practice.”

GCS is set to scrimmage again at home on Saturday, entertaining Brenham Christian Academy and Lucas Christian, starting at 11 a.m.

Fannindel’s new head coach Gabe Lane seemed to be pleased with the Falcons’ performance Saturday in scrimmages against GCS, Fruitvale and Fairhill.

“We played pretty well,” he said. “I was pretty happy. We’ve got a long ways to go. Blocking assignments. Stuff like that. We’re ahead of where we were last year. So many of them played last year.”

The Falcons will scrimmage against Friday at Savoy. The four-team scrimmage also includes Campbell, Savoy and Saint Jo.

Bruce Jones, a member of Fannindel’s state basketball championship team in 1988-89, was on the sidelines with the Falcons at the scrimmage. Jones was a guard on that championship team and also quarterbacked the Falcons to a state semifinalist football berth in 1988.

Royse City’s new head coach David Petroff said the Bulldogs are adapting well to the changes he’s brought to the football program. They also have quite a few new assistant coaches.

“It’s good,” he said. “I’m real proud of the kids. They’ve been working real hard.

“Everything’s real positive. These kids have taken it in.”

Petroff previously coached at Waco Midway for nine years, coaching the secondary and then serving as defensive coordinator. While he coached at Midway, the Panthers faced some of the elite teams in Texas including Lake Travis, Cedar Hill, Denton Ryan, Highland Park and Texas High of Texarkana. Midway went 13-1 last season, reaching the semifinals of Class 5A Division I.

“I’ve been around some good coaches,” he said.
