Coach: Farmersville's ahead of last year's pace

Herald-Banner Staff

FARMERSVILLE —   The second football season with Sammy Burnett at the helm is already going smoother for the Farmersville Fightin’ Farmers.

“I think we’ve had a great start to the season after the first year,” he said. “Instead of starting at a crawl for a week we’re actually at a jog. We’ve been real pleased with their attitudes and their effort.”

Burnett, who played for nine-time state champion coach Gordon Wood at Brownwood, said much of what he knows about football comes from Wood.

Farmersville, which went 6-5 last season and made the playoffs, returns six starters on offense and defense, including big-play guys Andrew Simons and Darrin Pennington.

Farmersville will entertain Palmer today in a preseason scrimmage scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

Fannindel’s new head coach Gabe Lane praised seniors Elijah Jones, Quincy Cuba, Cody Lemay, Stephen Lock and Wyatt Sachse.

“I’ve got a great senior class,” he said. “They’re the soul of our team.”

Lane said the Falcons are working hard as they try to make it back to the six-man playoffs.

“They like to practice,” he said. “They don’t go home. They like staying here.”

Fannindel’s been starting its practices at 8 a.m. but some of the players report much earlier.

“I get here at 5:30 to work out,” said Lane. “I’ve had four or five kids get here at 5:45 to 6. You seldom have to wait on anybody. That’s a great sign.”

Fannindel will scrimmage at Greenville Christian School today in a four-team scrimmage that also includes GCS, Arlington Fairhill and Fruitvale. It starts at 11 a.m.

Leonard’s scrimmage against Boles, originally scheduled for the Hornets’ home field in Quinlan, has been moved to Wolfe City today because of wet conditions with the Boles field. It’s set to start at 10 a.m. at Don Howard Stadium.

Other teams in action today include Celeste, Greenville Phoenix, Campbell, Cumby and Community.
