Cumby, Rains win playoff matches

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP

MINEOLA —   The Cumby Lady Trojans outlasted Gary, 25-19, 17-25, 6-25, 25-22, 17-15, in a Class A bi-district volleyball playoff match.

  Candice Horrocks tallied eight points, six assists and four aces for Cumby.

  Grace Campbell served for 10 points, plus had five kills and seven digs.

  Alex Duck managed eight points, eight kills and six digs.

  Julia Goncalves tallied seven points and a team-high 11 assists.

  Demi McDonald served for 10 points and led in digs with 12.

  Madison Thomas had 10 digs, four points and four kills, while Kaylee Giles tallied five kills.

  Mackenzie Fyke had a kill and a dig for Cumby, which will face the Avery Lady Bulldogs for the area championship at 6 p.m. on Friday at Paris High School.

 

Rains beats Henderson in five sets

TYLER — Shye Meador-McCray put away 24 kills to lead the Rains Lady Wildcats to a 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-9 Class 3A area volleyball victory over Henderson on Thursday.

Briley Cole also managed 15 kills, including the match-winning point for Rains and had four blocks.

  Rains, now 30-9 for the season, advances to the regional quarterfinals to play either North Lamar or Gilmer.

  Henderson finished at 30-10.

      Steve Guffey was a true sportsman in every sense of the word.
      Guffey, who died on Saturday at the age of 50, was a standout athlete and coach, who was also an avid golfer, angler and hunter. He was an educator. teacher, mentor and a friend to many who’ve been paying their tributes online and at candlelight vigils on Sunday in Ladonia and on Monday in Campbell.  Guffey’s memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Campbell High School gymnasium, where he coached the Lady Indians’ basketball team the past 12 years.

      Baylor-exes Colton Williams and Jeremy Frye teamed up to shoot a 15-under 57 on two trips around the nine-hole Wright Park Municipal Course layout to lead the championship flight by two shots over former Baylor Bears Drew McGee and Michael McKinley.

  • Monster Ball golf tourney will crown new champions

      One thing’s for certain at the third annual Craig Bowers Memorial Monster Ball golf tournament that starts today in Greenville.
      The tournament, which has attracted a record field of 104 teams, will crown a new championship team.
      Last year’s winning team of Brian Rowell and Michael Meyer can’t play in this year’s 36-hole event at Wright Park Municipal and Oak Creek Country because Rowell is competing in the OK Kids Korral event on the Adams tour in Norman, Okla. Meyer has been his caddy. Rowell is currently in 23rd place after shooting rounds of 71, 68 and 68 at the Belmar Golf Club.

      Nearly 40 youngsters ages 12 and under played some golf in pleasant weather conditions on Thursday at Wright Park Municipal in Greenville.
      The event was the Little Monster Ball tournament in conjunction with the Craig Bowers Memorial Monster Ball golf tournament set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Greenville. The big highlight is the 36-hole Monster Ball tournament that features a record field of 104 teams this year.
