Scroggins leads qualifying at Greenville tourney

BOWLING

GREENVILLE —   Veteran left-hander Mike Scroggins had no problem figuring out a tough shot on Saturday at Shenaniganz to lead qualifying at the PBA 2013 Greenville Southwest Open bowling tournament.

Scroggins, an eight-time winner on the Professional Bowlers Association tour, averaged 228 for eight games to lead qualifying by 117 pins with his total of 1,824. Scroggins got off to a strong start with a 237 in his first game and then rolled a 256 in game two on the Viper oil pattern.

Scroggins, who is from Amarillo, has won two major titles, including the USBC Masters in 2005 and the U.S. Open in 2009.

Scroggins’ twin brother Mark bowled only one game before withdrawing with an injury. Mark Scroggins was a finalist in this tournament in 2011, falling to Wes Malott, who is not in the field this year.

Defending champion Nathan Bohr of Wichita, Kan., averaged 207.75 to become one of the 22 bowlers to advance to today’s semifinals. Bohr defeated Dino Castillo, 199-194, in last year’s championship match. Castillo missed the cut in 24th place after averaging 194.25.

Caddo Mills bowler Shayne Wilson averaged 200.75 to become the only local bowler to survive the cut.

Keller bowler Chris Hibbits averaged 213.37 to advance in second place. Hibbits ranks second in the Southwest region point standings to Bohr.

Beaumont bowler Mark Williams also survived the cut. Williams has won seven PBA tour titles, including two majors, plus three senior titles and 17 regional tournaments.

The semifinals start at 8:30 a.m. today, with match play to begin at noon.

There is an admission charge for spectators with the proceeds benefitting the junior bowlers program.
