Cumby’s Lady Trojans will be trying for their second straight state powerlifting title today in Corpus Christi.
Five Lady Trojans have qualified for the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Class A state championships. Taylor Gifford, Gabriella Aguilar, Kayla Akers, Brianna Stone and Breanna Gay have advanced to the state meet following their performances at the Region III meet on March 1 in Wills Point.
Gifford won the 123-pound class, Stone took the 181s and Akers was second in the 165s at the region meet. Akers also won awards for best squat (380) and best overall lifter after totaling 855. Gifford totaled 650 pounds, including bests of 285 in the squat, 100 in the bench and 265 in the deadlift. Stone won the 181s with best lifts of 300, 175 and 310 for a 785 total.
Bailey Braddock of Cumby was also fourth in the 181s and Gay was fourth in the 220-plus pound class. Gay made the qualifying total in the 220-plus with bests of 335, 175 and 355 for an 865 total.
Aguilar, who was sixth at regional, qualified with a 730 total in the 148s.
Cumby won that regional title with 23 points as Palestine Westwood was second with 20, follwed by White Oak (13), Daingerfield (12) and New Diana (12).
Katelynn Clark of Celeste also qualified for state in the 97s with her total of 480 that includes bests of 185 in the squat, 70 in the bench and 225 in the deadlift.
Sabrina Chambliss from Celeste qualified for state in the 220s with at 665 that included bests of 240, 135 and 290.
Cumby outpointed Center Point 22-18 to win the Class A state title last year in Corpus Christi. Louise was third with 17 points, followed by Trhall (16) and Big Lake Reagan County (14).
The Class A, 2A and 5A lifters begin lifting at 9 a.m. at the American Bank Center.
Leonard’s Lady Tigers will be lifting in the 2A division today after finishing second at the Region 6 Division 3 meet in Leonard on Feb. 23. Whitesboro won the meet with 46 points and Leonard scored 23.
Taylor Brown of Leonard qualified in 181s after finishing second with a 640 total. Her best lifts were 275, 110 and 255.
Tenasha Ballard from Leonard won the 220-plus pound division at Leonard with a 745 total that included bests of 295, 135 and 315.
