Depth in certain places is getting to be a bit of a problem for the Quinlan Ford Panthers football team.
“We had a couple of kids move off,” said Ford coach Todd Wallace. “Got a couple of kids hurt. I thought our offensive line was going to be a strength and I still think it is but we’re already getting thin.”
The Panthers will also have to find some players to fill in the big holes left by graduating seniors James Silkey and Taylor Sikorsky, who both topped the 1,000-yard rushing mark last season.
“We had two kids last year that could make plays,” said Wallace. “Our kids overachieved last year. Our kids are going to have to overachieve this year.”
Ford, picked to finish fourth in District 14-3A, went 8-4 last season, finishing first in 14-3A and advancing to the area round of the playoffs.
The Panthers will entertain Edgewood at 5:30 p.m. today in their first preseason scrimmage. Their second scrimmage is scheduled for Aug. 22 at Greenville.
Ford will open the season on Aug. 30 against Troup in Bullard.
Ford is one of four local football teams set to scrimmage today.
Wolfe City will entertain Paris Chisum at 7 p.m. at Don Howard Stadium in Wolfe City, Lone Oak is to entertain Bonham at 7 p.m. at Buffalo Stadium and Commerce will play host to Winnsboro at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Commerce.
There’s nine more scrimmages scheduled for Saturday around the area.
