New midfield logo creates national buzz

COMMERCE — That’s one big logo.

The new Texas A&M University-Commerce logo was unveiled Thursday as workers continued the installation of turf in Memorial Stadium.

The golden lion stretches 50 yards, and is rumored to be the largest midfield logo in the nation.

Photos of the field quickly made the rounds on social media and popped up on national news outlets like CBS Sports and Yahoo! Work on the new field and track began in late May and will be ready for the Lions season opener against Sul Ross State on Sept. 7.

“That’s a full 50 yards of logo, my friends,” Tom Fornelli CBS Sports writer said. “Which makes it more of a half-field logo than a mid-field logo.”

ESPN’s Darren Rovell called it “the biggest on-field logo in the game.”

In an interview conducted in February, A&M-Commerce Athletic Director Ryan Ivey said the installation will cost approximately $75,000. The new turf was initially going to be blue, but A&M-Commerce could not secure rights to use the blue field.

 The logo is the most recent in a series of upgrades over the past few years that include a new scoreboard, away bleachers and locker room.

The Lions also have a new head football coach — Colby Carthel was hired by A&M-Commerce in January after serving as a defensive coordinator under his father Don.

The program has struggled recently, going 3-8, 1-9 and 1-9 over the past three years.

Carthel recently spoke at the Lone Star Conference Football Media Day in Fort Worth after the Lions were selected to finish last in the LSC preseason polls

“That’s to be expected,” Carthel said. “We haven’t done anything yet, but neither has the first place team. It’s not where you start; it’s where you finish.”

Initial construction on Memorial Stadium finished in 1950. A new field and track were installed most recently in 2006. Commerce High School also plays its home games at Memorial Stadium.
