Rain stays away from Cotton Patch Challenge

GREENVILLE —   The potential for rain kept some of the riders away from the 16th Annual Cotton Patch Bicycle Challenge on Saturday in Greenville.

It shouldn’t have. Riders dealt with mostly overcast skies and mild temperatures as they competed in the road race and one-mile time trial. The event attracted 551 tour riders and 240 racers, off from last year’s total of more than 1,000 tour riders and racers.

Adam Koble of the Corrinth Cycling/Harden Dental team won the men’s pro 1-2 category omnium after earning 35 points with a win in the time trial and a third place finish in the 74-mile road race. Kyle Parrott was second in the omnium and Kyle Sigl wound up third.

Camilla Schmitz of Thinkfinance Racing won the 62-mile road race and was third in the one-mile time trial to claim the women’s open omnium with 35 points. Kathryn Hunter was second and Jan Bennett took third.

Greenville rider Jefferey May won the junior open one-mile time trial and was fifth in the men’s category 4 omnium with 14 points after finishing seventh in the 62-mile road race and 11th in the one-mile time trial.

The event was part of the Rally ‘Round Greenville Festival.
