GREENVILLE — The Lone Oak Buffaloes and the Caddo Mills Foxes continued their long standing rivalry on Friday night at Ed Locker Stadium.

The steady drizzle that kept fans under umbrellas for most of the game didn’t dampen the efforts of the Lone Oak Buffaloes (2-1), who won bragging rights for another year by defeating the Foxes 27-14.

Lone Oak won the toss but deferred on the opening kickoff. After the Foxes lost three yards on their first three plays, a Buffalo personal foul penalty gave Caddo Mills a fresh set of downs. Fox quarterback Damian Newby then broke through for 33 yards on the next play, but that would be it. The Buff defense forced the ball over on downs and Lone Oak took over from its 27 with 8:24 left in the first.

Lone Oak quarterback Kyle Crow then led his team on a six-play drive ending with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Kason Freelen. Cody Hardin was good on his PAT, making the score 7-0, which would be the score at the end of the first period.

A wet ball and a wet field kept the Buffaloes on the ground as they began the second quarter. Ty Tolleson carried the ball five times for a total of 23 yards on the drive, reaching the end zone on a 4-yard dash with 7:50 left in the half. Hardin split the uprights again making the score 14-0.

Caddo Mills’ offense was still struggling to get on track and was forced to punt again on its next possession. Lone Oak then had a chance to go up by three touchdowns, driving the ball from its 27-yard line to the Caddo Mills 1-yard line in five plays but the Fox defense forced a fumble and the Foxes regained possession with 4:06 left in the half.

The Foxes were determined to take advantage. Behind some very nice running by Fox running back Daxx Hill, they were able to prevent the shutout. Hill burst up the middle for 52 yards for a Fox touchdown. The score at half was Lone Oak 14, Caddo Mills 6.

The rain continued and both teams traded punts late into the third quarter. With 4:42 left in the third, Tolleson scored his second of three touchdowns of the night on an 11-yard run, making the score 20-6. Tolleson rushed for 212 yards on 22 carries to lead the Buffalo offense.

With 6:23 left in the game, Tolleson put the Buffaloes up by three touchdowns punching the ball in from the 15-yard line. Another Hardin PAT made the score 27-6.

Caddo Mills wasn’t about to lay down though. On the next series, Newby opened up the field, finding Keaton Jones on pass plays of 23 and 12 yards each. Then after a 25-keeper, Newby ran the ball in from the 11-yard line to make the score 27-14 with 1:23 left in the game.

A Fox onside kick attempt landed out of bounds allowing the Buffaloes to run out the clock to secure the win.

Crow completed seven passes on 13 attempts for 123 yards and one TD.

Caddo Mills’s Hill racked up 131 yards of offense and one TD.

The Buffaloes are back home next week for homecoming against Paris Chism, while Caddo Mills plays at Community.
