Rains, Caddo Mills spikers face regional quarterfinal tests

GREENVILLE —   Rains of Emory and Caddo Mills will continue their climbs up the state volleyball playoff ladders tonight.

  The 30-9 Rains Ladycats will take on North Lamar in a Class 3A regional quarterfinal match at Mount Pleasant, starting at 7.

  Rains, the District 14-3A champion, opened the playoffs with a 25-11, 25-20, 25-14 bi-district win over Atlanta and then outlasted Henderson, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-9, in the area round.

  Shye Meador-McCray led Rains against Henderson with 24 kills, while Briley Coley put down 15 kills, including the match-winning point. Cole also had four blocks.

  North Lamar, the 13-3A champion, opened with a 25-16, 25-22, 25-16 victory over Kaufman and then outlasted Gilmer, 26-28, 25-18, 14-25, 27-25, 15-12.

  The Rains-North Lamar winner takes on the winner between Argyle and Decatur in the regional semifinals.

  Caddo Mills, 33-5, takes on Callisburg in a 2A regional quarterfinal at 7 at Denton High School.

  Caddo Mills, the 12-2A champion, won its bi-district match over Whitewright, 25-11, 25-19, 25-14, and then defeated Maypearl, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23, in the area round.

Hallie Smith led Caddo Mills against Maypearl with 14 kills and three blocks. Kristin Newell had 12 kills and three blocks. Jaylynn Gracy finished with 10 kills and a team-high 27 digs. Natalee Wright set for 38 assists.

  Callisburg, the 11-2A champion, opened the playoffs with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-7 win over Farmersville and then dispatched Boyd, 25-19, 25-11, 25-18.

  The Caddo Mills-Callisburg winner advances to the regional semifinals against either Queen City or Alba-Golden.

      Each summer the Greenville Lions’ coaching staff goes through a transition phase as some coaches move on to other schools and new coaches are hired to take their place.
      This summer is no exception. There’s changes in the coaching staffs for the boys and girls programs that’ll involve the football, volleyball, boys soccer, powerlifting and softball teams.

      His nickname in Greenville is “Pee Wee,” but Oliver Hale is a big man on the tennis court and in the kitchen.
      Hale, who is a 1971 graduate of Greenville High School, won three medals at the 2014 Transplant Games of America recently in Houston while competing in the 60-and-over age category. He won a gold medal in men’s doubles, a silver in men’s singles and a bronze in mixed doubles along with playing partner Irena Bucci.

      Guffey, who died on Saturday at the age of 50, was a standout athlete and coach, who was also an avid golfer, angler and hunter. He was an educator. teacher, mentor and a friend to many who’ve been paying their tributes online and at candlelight vigils on Sunday in Ladonia and on Monday in Campbell.  Guffey’s memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Campbell High School gymnasium, where he coached the Lady Indians’ basketball team the past 12 years.
