Greenville Lions finally make it home

GREENVILLE —   Home at last.

That’s the good news for the Greenville Lions’ football team, which has played four of its last five games on the road, including back-to-back games during the past two weeks in Wylie. The 0-7 Lions will entertain the 1-6 McKinney North Bulldogs at 7:30 at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.

The Lions lost at Frisco Heritage (10-3) and Royse City (21-10) and then lost at home to Lucas Lovejoy (46-13) before falling to Wylie (50-7) and Wylie East (42-17) in successive games at the Wylie ISD Stadium.

Greenville put together its best half of the season last week against Wylie East, grabbing leads of 14-7 and 17-14 before East scored on a 49-yard Hail Mary pass from quarterback Garrett McCain to wide receiver Marcell Ateman with one second left before halftime. Wylie East scored three more touchdowns in the second half on a 4-yard run, a 53-yard interception return and a 30-yard pass to pull away.

Greenville limited Wylie East to 366 total yards. The Raiders had been leading 4A teams in the Metroplex with their average of 498 yards per game.

The Lions’ offense managed 243 total yards, including 161 yards rushing and 82 passing. Quarterback Marquist Davis went 5-of-10 passing for 82 yards and also rushed for 62 yards on 19 carries. Davis leads the Lions for the season with 413 yards and one touchdown on 97 carries and is 33-of-68 passing for 68 yards and two touchdowns.

Jamar Clark, who rushed for 42 yards on 12 carries last week, ranks second with 191 yards on 76 carries.

Tyler Matthew ranks second with 165 yards on 46 carries after rushing for 55 yards on 10 carries, including a 5-yard touchdown run against Wylie East.

Eric Quiroz (8-92) and Michael Hernandez (8-55) lead the Lion receivers. Neftali Vargas has six catches for 57 yards.

Chase Hamilton scored for the Lions last week on a 4-yard pass.

McKinney North has played a tough schedule so far, losing 21-17 to Newman Smith, 31-10 to Prosper, 42-21 to Frisco Centennial 45-21 to Sherman, 24-17 to Lucas Lovejoy and 35-20 last week to Wylie.   The Bulldogs’ only victory was 35-21 over Royse City. Five of the Bulldogs’ losses have been to teams with winning records, including Newman Smith (4-3), Prosper (6-1), Centennial (6-1), Sherman (6-1) and Lovejoy (7-0).

McKinney North finished with 329 yards against Wylie but gave up 366 yards. North quarterback Ben Dutze was 15-of-30 passing for 178 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown pass to Evan Jones.

The Bulldogs rushed for 151 yards, collecting 69 yards on 13 carries by Justin Jones and 68 on 16 rushes by Ronald Jones.

K.J. Bualicex caught five passes for 46 yards in that game and Jones finished with 84 yards on just two receptions.

The Lions, who’ve lost their last 27 games, have two more remaining games: on Nov. 2 at Denison and at home on Nov. 9 versus Sherman.
