J.J. Pearce turns back Greenville Lions, 7-5

GREENVILLE —   The Richardson Pearce Mustangs held off a late comeback to nip the Greenville Lions 7-5 in non-district baseball on Tuesday night at John Mason Field.

  Pearce jumped out to a 7-0 lead by the second inning. The Lions scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to close to within two runs but couldn’t get any closer as they dropped to 1-5-1 for   season. Pearce improved to 2-2-1.

  “We need to get things started quicker,” said Greenville coach Cody Salyers. “We’ve been playing catch-up. We need to jump on them early and play with a lead.”

  Pearce got things started in the first inning as Davis Rodgers walked, Matt Cohen was hit by a pitch and then Alec Wright tripled to score Rodgers and Cohen.

  The Mustangs extended their lead with five runs in the second off four hits.

  Greenville would get two runs in the fifth as Austin Craig and Travis Koger scored after drawing walks.

  The Lions scored three more in the sixth as Jacob Jarvis and Tanner Knudson both singled and Austin Craig walked to load the bases. Then Travis Koger delivered a three-run single.

  In the seventh Mustang pitcher Jason Carr retired Greenville in order for the save.

  CADDO MILLS — Mary Moran fired a four-hitter as the Caddo Mills Lady Foxes claimed a 7-2 non-district softball victory over Brownsboro on Tuesday.

  Moran struck out five and walked one.

  Kristen Maxwell went 2-for-3 to lead the Caddo Mills hitters.

  CELESTE — Braden Morrow had three hits and three runs to help the Celeste Blue Devils to a 10-3 non-district baseball win on Tuesday over Sulphur Bluff.

  Blake Garcia and Smith both had two hits for Celeste, which improved to 3-2 for the season.

  D.J. Jarrard, who struck out 10 in 4 2/3 innings, picked up the mound win.

  LONE OAK — Freshman Jayce Womack’s hit with the bases loaded in the ninth inning gave the Lone Oak Lady Buffs a 17-16 non-district softball victory over Sunnyvale on Tuesday.

  Chelsea Rigsby scored the game-winning run after Alyssa Busby drove in a run and scored a run to start a Lone Oak comeback in the final inning.

  Lone Oak will head to a tournament on Thursday in Cooper, opening against Commerce in the first round.

Wolfe City 18,

Campbell 4

  CAMPBELL — Wolfe City claimed an 18-4 District 15-A softball win over Campbell on Tuesday.

  Sarah Andrews picked up the mound win.
