GREENVILLE —   The state-ranked McKinney North Bulldogs defeated the Greenville Lions 7-2 at John Mason Field Friday night in District 13-4A baseball.

The Bulldogs, who ranked No. 2 in one poll and seventh in another, scored four runs in the first inning off of a Montana Sadler walk, singles by Anthony Herrera and Julian Pope and a Trey Segui double.

Greenville answered with a run in the bottom of the first as Jacob Jarvis tripled and scored on a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the second as Sadler reached on a error and Herrera singled. Sadler and Herrera scored on a Pope single and an error.

McKinney North stretched its lead to 7-1 in the fourth inning with a Herrera double and a throwing error.

Greenville would close the gap to 7-2 in the fifth as Justin Koger doubled to drive in Matt Craig.

Jacob Jarvis led the Lions in hitting, going 2-for-3 while Justin Koger was 1-for-2.

Julian Pope took the mound win, allowing only two hits in four innings. Herrera relieved Pope in the fifth, allowing one hit while striking two.

“We gave them too much at the beginning of the game,” said Greenville coach Cody Salyers. “They were living off of their reputation. Once we settled down, we realized we could play with them. We’ve got to get started early and not worry about the names on their shirts.”

McKinney North won the junior varsity contest 11-7 in a game that went only four innings because of time.

Greenville is now 9-11-1 for the season and 1-4 in district.

The Lions travel to Denison on Tuesday to take on the Yellow Jackets with the varsity game starting at 7:30 p.m.
