SULPHUR SPRINGS —   No. 1 ranked Saltillo had too much height for the Campbell Lady Indians, who dropped their Class A Division II regional quarterfinal basketball playoff game by a 51-23 margin.

Saltillo’s lineup features five players who stand 5-10 or taller, including 6-1 senior Victoria Stetcher, the Lady Lions’ scoring leader with 17 points.

Campbell only has one player taller than 5-8: 5-10 freshman Sarah Looney.

“We blocked out great against Dodd,” said Campbell coach Steve Guffey, whose Lady Indians upset No. 3 state-ranked Dodd City 52-45 in the area round. “But not that well against Saltillo. At times we had a 5-2 blocking a 5-10 girl.”

Saltillo dominated on the boards, often holding Campbell to one shot on the defensive end and then getting offensive rebounds on the other end that produced putback baskets.

“They got too many second chance points in the first half,” said Guffey.

Karli Brewer, a 5-7 senior, also tossed in 12 points for Saltillo, while 5-10 freshman Haylee Clover added eight, plus 5-10 senior Ariel Tippit and 5-10 senior Andrea Tippit both tossed in six points.

Only two Campbell players scored. Haley Davidson, the 5-5 junior, scored inside and out to finish with a game-high 19 points. Breanna Ashmore, the 5-8 freshman, added four points.

Campbell, which started the season at 2-6, finished at 22-10.

“We’ve had a great year,” said Guffey. “I don’t know that we expected to go this far at the beginning of the year. We came together at the end and played hard.”

Saltillo, now 29-5, advances to the Region III-A tournament in Tyler on Friday.
