A&M-Commerce women turn back Zias, 69-59

COMMERCE —   Texas A&M University-Commerce jumped out to a 33-17 halftime lead and hung on for a 69-59 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday in Lone Star Conference women’s basketball.

  Breanna Harris fired in 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to spark the Lions, who snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 6-8 for the season and 4-5 in conference play.

  Symone Brown, who was 5-of-8 from the field, also tossed in 12 points for the Lions, while La’Tisha Hearne produced 10 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals.

  Eastern New Mexico, which collected 16 points from Nelsha Peterson and 10 from Jasmine Johnson, dropped to 3-14 and 2-7.

  A&M-Commerce held Eastern New Mexico to only 26-percent shooting in the first half and forced 11 turnovers to build its big halftime lead. The Zias went 0-for-5 from 3-point range.

  The Lions shot 38 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from 3-point range in the first half, spreading the scoring around among Harris (6), Hearne (6), Brown (6) and Shanekqua Bibbs (5).

  The Lions went on runs of 10-0 and 14-0 to build early leads of 10-2 and 27-8.

A&M-Commerce’s lead got as high as 23 points twice in the second half before the Zias made a late run to cut it to 63-57 with 1:10 remaining following a layup by Lakeeyscia Grffin.

  But Hearne hit two free throws for the Lions with 1:04 remaining and then Harris beat the Greyhounds’ defense for a snowbird layup that clinched the victory with 32 seconds remaining.

  Eastern New Mexico shot 50 percent from the field in the second half to finish at 39.6 percent for the game. the Lions hit 35.8 percent.
