Lady Lions scrimmage three soccer teams

GREENVILLE —   Greenville’s Lady Lions tuned up for the upcoming soccer season by scrimmaging Kilgore, Longview Spring Hill and Terrell on Saturday at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.

Kilgore outscored the Lady Lions 3-2 in Greenville’s first scrimmage. Priscilla Carrillo and Maddy Crabtree scored the Lady Lions’ two goals.

Greenville then outscored Spring Hill 2-0 in the second scrimmage. Crabtree booted a goal from inside 10 yards off a deflection for Greenville’s first goal and then Carrillo scored from about 12 yards on a cross from Crabtree.

Crabtree scored the only goal off an assist from Carrillo as the Lady Lions wrapped up the day by   blanking Terrell 1-0.

“I think they did great,” said the Lady Lions’ new head coach Caree McKethan.

McKethan said the Lady Lions’ made some successful adjustments to the defense after the first game.

“They adjusted to the physical play,” she said.

McKethan said the transition in coaches is going. Ryan Dunlevy, who coached the Lady Lions to back-to-back district championships, left for a position in Midland.

“I think they’ve adjusted to me well,” said McKethan. “I don’t think there’s a big difference between me and Coach Dunlevy. We just need to find a way to get our core in the right places.”

The Lady Lions went 22-2-2 last season, earning top 10 status for the Dallas Metroplex as well as in Class 4A. They went unbeaten for 21 straight games before dropping their bi-district game to R.L. Turner, 1-0.

The Lady Lions will officially open their season on Thursday in the Mount Pleasant tournament.

The Lions, who went 8-10-3 last season and also made the playoffs, will scrimmage Whitehouse at 5 p.m. Monday, also at Ford Stadium.
