Jordan leaves Boles; Cooper to take over

GREENVILLE — The Maypearl Panthers will definitely have a Quinlan Boles connection after the hiring of Gordon Jordan as head football coach and boys athletic coordinator.

Jordan, who coached 13 years at Boles, joins former Boles coach Jason Wallen on the Panthers’ coaching staff. Wallen is the Lady Panthers’ head basketball coach and girls athletic coordinator.

“I guess it was time for me to move on,” said Jordan, who’d been the Boles head football coach for the past three seasons following 10 years as an assistant coach.

Jordan called it a “heartfelt” decision to leave Boles, where he “loved the school district and the kids.”

“I think they’ll be fine,” he said. “I think there’s a good group coming.”

Jordan is taking over a Maypearl football program that went 1-19 over the past two seasons. Jordan said with direction and hard work the Panthers can turn things around.

“They want to be good,” he said. “They want to do right.”

Former Greenville Lions coach Chawn Cooper is the finalist to replace Jordan at Boles.

“It’s not official,” said Cooper, who must wait for the next board meeting of the Boles Independent School District before his contract is approved. “We’re pretty excited about it.”

Cooper was the Lions’ head football coach and athletic director for the 2011 and 2012 football seasons and was an assistant principal at Greenville High School during the 2012-13 school year. Cooper’s been an assistant football coach at Greenville, Caddo Mills, Sulphur Springs, Wolfe City and Scurry-Rosser and been the head powerlifting coach for several individual state champions and state champion teams.
