Local athletes advance to state in track and field

GREENVILLE —   The local area is sending 12 athletes to the University Interscholastic League State Track and Field Championships next week in Austin.

  Twelve athletes from seven schools have qualified in 13 events for the meet scheduled on May 9-10 at the Mike A. Myers Stadium.

  Six of the athletes are making return trips including Charlotte Brown and Grant Russell from Emory Rains, Hanah Nichol and Trevor Hemphill of Lone Oak, J’Kaylee Clark of Farmersville and Brittyn Rushing from Leonard. Earning their first trips are Keely Morrow of Nevada Community, D’Lance Sharp from Commerce and Kenya Smith of Wolfe City, plus Hailey Nelson, Karlee Young and Chloe Wall of Farmersville.

  Brown and Russell are competing again in the Class 3A pole vault and triple jump after finishing second in those two events at the Region II-3A meet in Commerce. Both nailed down their berths with clutch performances on the last attempt as Brown cleared a season-best 11 feet 3 inches and Russell leaped a career-best 46-2 1/4. Russell finished fifth last year at state with a leap of 44-10 3/4 and   Brown was eighth at 10-6 while becoming the first legally blind athlete to compete at the state meet.

  Morrow earned her trip to state by winning the 800-meter dash on Saturday at the Region II-3A meet in the time of 2 minutes 20.97 seconds. She was also third in the 400 at 59.57.

  Hemphill made it back to state in the boys 800 after finishing second at the Region III-2A meet in Whitehouse in the time of 1:59.21. He was fifth at state last year with a 1:57.72.

  Nichol is advancing to state in the Class 2A 3200-meter run after finishing second at Whitehouse with a 12:39.06. Nichol was eighth last year at state in the 1600 (5:48.13) and was eighth at state in the 3200 as a sophomore. Nichol clocked a 5:53.64 in the 1600 at regional to finish fourth.

  Sharp from Commerce earned a trip in the 2A 400-meter dash after winning the regional title with a 49.68 time. He was also fifth in the 200 at 22.87 into a stiff wind. 

  Rushing is advancing again in the 2A long jump after winning the Region II-2A title in Stephenville with a leap of 17-8. Rushing was seventh at state last year, leaping 17-3 1/4.

  Clark from Farmersville will run again at state in the 2A 400. She finished third at the Region II-3A meet in Stephenville with a 58.79 time but qualified as a wild-card. Clark was eighth last year at 1:02.26.

  Wall qualified in the 2A girls pole vault for the first time, finishing second at regional with an 11-3 clearance.

  Young was second in the 2A girls triple jump at regional, qualifying for state with a leap of 36-3/4.

Nelson cleared 5-5 at regional to finish third and made it in as a wild card.

  Smith of Wolfe City is advancing in the girls Class A high jump (5-5) and long jump (17-6) after finishing first and second in those two events at the Region II-A meet in Abilene. Smith was also third at regional in the 100-meter dash (12.76).
