Cumby names Tom Dracos as new coach

GREENVILLE —   Cumby’s new head football coach-athletic director is certainly familiar with the local area.

Tom Dracos, recently hired by the Cumby Independendent School District, coached the offensive line for two seasons with the Greenville Lions. One of the offensive linemen he worked closely with, Byron Bell, now plays for the Carolina Panthers in the National Football League.

Dracos’ wife, Jennifer, grew up in Greenville and will be the new elementary school principal in Cumby. Her parents still live in Greenville, Roger and Carolyn Carwile.

Dracos is taking over from Gary Parrish, who resigned at the end of the school year after one season as the Trojans’ head coach and was a former assistant coach with the Trojans. Parrish coached the Cumby Lady Trojans to a state powerlifting title in 2012.

This is Dracos’ first season as a head coach.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity, the challenge and being so close to family,” said Dracos.

Dracos has spent this week getting to know some of the Trojans who’ve been on their own working out.

“The kids are great,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed getting to know them. They’ve adjusted pretty well so far.”

Dracos said he’s pushing for a “family-type atmosphere” at Cumby, where the football players to go to volleyball matches and cheer on the Lady Trojans and the Lady Trojans cheer on the football team.

“The girls program is in pretty good shape,” he said.

Dracos was the offensive coordinator for the past football season at Class 2A Callisburg, helping the Wildcats to a 9-2 record.

He also coached two seasons at Van, one year at Mexia, one year at Victoria and one season at John Tyler in Tyler.

The 6-5 Dracos was an offensive lineman at Cypress Creek in Houston and at McNeese State in Louisiana.
