PBA regional tourney starts today in Greenville

GREENVILLE —   Nathan Bohr will begin defense of his title today during the start of the PBA Southwest Open bowling tournament at Shenaniganz in Greenville.

  Bohr, who bowls with the B squad at 2:30 p.m. today, is one of 61 bowlers entered in the Professional Bowlers Association regional event. Bohr, who has been a regular on the PBA’s top tour, beat another tour regular, Dino Castillo, 199-194 in last year’s finals. Bohr grew up in Round Rock but now resides in Wichita, Kan. Castillo is from Carrollton.

  The two-day tournament rolls off at 8 a.m. today with the A squad. The semifinals are set for 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, with match play to begin at noon.

  Also on the entry list are twin brothers, Mike and Mark Scroggins from Amarillo. Mike Scroggins has won eight titles on the PBA tour and has earned $1,477,104. the left-hander ranked sixth on the PBA tour in average for the 2012-13 season at 225.19.

  Mark Scroggins is a former regular on the tour who is the bowling coach at West Texas A&M. Mark Scroggins lost in the 2011 Greenville tournament finals to his former student at West Texas A&M, Wes Malott.

  Mesquite bowler Joe Findling, who operates the Champions Pro Shop at Shenaniganz, will bowl in the A squad on Saturday. Findling ranks eighth in regional points with 74,525 points.

  Bohr leads the Southwest region in points with 121,727. Other entrants from the top 10 in points include Chris Hibbits of Keller (No. 2), Sean Lavery-Spahr of Denton (No. 3), D.J. Archer of Friendswood (No. 6), Mike Bailey of Allen (No. 7) and Andy Patterson of Tyler (No. 9).

  Several local league bowlers are also entered, including Zakary Edgerton, Gary Slinkard and Shayne Wilson.
