Texas A&M University-Commerce will recognize their seniors today in the last home basketball games of the season for the Lion men and women.
Both Lion teams, who’ve qualified for the Lone Star Conference tournament that starts on Wednesday in Allen, will face strong tests from a pair of talented Tarleton State teams.
The 6-19 Lion women, who are 5-10 in LSC play, will entertain the 19-6 TexAnns in the first game of the doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. in the Field House. Tarleton State is 10-5 in conference play, including a 74-64 win over the Lions on Feb. 1 in Stephenville. Tarleton State spread the scoring around with Brianna Bledsoe (18 points), Kiara Wright (15), Shanae Lowrance (15) and Kathy Thomas (13).
Devin Oliver led the Lion women in that game with 16 points, while Ashlee Johnson chipped in 12 and Aubree Butts added 10.
Tarleton State has won the last seven games between the two women’s teams.
A&M-Commerce’s 17-8 men, who are 6-7 in the LSC, will face the No. 2 nationally-ranked Texans in the second game of the doubleheader at about 7:30. Tarleton State’s only loss of the season was 77-75 in overtime to Midwestern State on Feb. 5 in Stephenville. Since that loss, the 24-1 Texans have won their last six games. They are 12-1 in conference play, including an 84-71 win over A&M-Commerce in Stephenville. Chuck Guy led the Texans that night with 16 points, while Davene Carter and Tashawn Mabry both tossed in 14.
Daniel Ehambe led the Lions against Tarleton State with 15 points, while LaDon Carnegie and Cameron Blue both added 13.
A&M-Commerce’s men have won their last three games by margins of 99-78 over Angelo State, 78-71 over Eastern New Mexico and 83-82 over West Texas A&M.
Tarleton State has taken the last eight games in the men’s series.
