Lone Oak faces New Boston in third round of playoffs

GREENVILLE —   Lone Oak, which lost to New Boston in the bi-district round of the Class 2A football playoffs, gets another playoff crack at the Lions tonight in basketball.

  The two teams will battle in the 2A regional quarterfinals, starting at 7 p.m. at Paris High School.

  New Boston won the bi-district football title over Lone Oak in what sounded like a basketball score, 61-39.

  Lone Oak brings a 25-3 record and No. 19 state ranking into the contest. New Boston is unranked.

  Lone Oak has won its two playoff games by margins of 58-28 over Palmer and 47-34 over Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill.

  New Boston beat Rivercrest 67-60 in the bi-district round and then state-ranked Dallas Faith Family 50-43 at area.

  Ethan Fite and Trevor Hemphill led Lone Oak to the win over Chapel Hill with 13 points each, while Clint  Mahand added eight and Sawyer Zachary tossed in seven.

  The Lone Oak-New Boston winner advances to the regional semifinals  at Tarleton State in Stephenville with a 6 p.m. game on Friday at Wisdom Gym against No. 4 state-ranked Ponder, which won its regional quarterfinal, 65-43 over Millsap.
