COMMERCE —   Texas A&M University-Commerce’s women protected their hold on seventh place in the Lone Star Conference basketball standings with a 77-74 victory on Saturday over Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The Lions needed the win because only the top eight teams are invited to the postseason LSC tournament on March 6-9 in Allen. A&M-Commerce improved to 8-13 overall and 6-10 in the conference, while A&M-Kingsville dropped to 5-17 and at 3-13 is in 10th place.

A&M-Commerce hit four of its five five shots and seven of its first 10 to grab the early lead at 14-8. The Lions cooled off a little but not much to finish at 50 percent shooting for the game (29-of-58).

A&M-Kingsville shot 40 percent from 3-point range (10-of-25) to stay in the ball game but could not get Ashley Vera’s 3-pointer to fall at the buzzer.

A&M-Kingsville’s Sheana Jones was 5-of-7 from downtown to lead all scorers with 31 points. Viera finished with 13 points, five assists and four steals.

A&M-Commerce spread its scoring around among Breanna Harris (19), La’Tisha Hearne (19), Danielle Dixon (17) and Symone Brown (15).

Harris managed another double-double with 14 rebounds, including six on the offensive end.

Dixon also added eight rebounds, five assists and three steals to her total.

Brown, who was 2-of-2 from 3-point range, pulled down seven rebounds.

A&M-Commerce has just four games left in the regular schedule starting with a Wednesday night game at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls.
