Leonard to face S&S in third-round rematch

GREENVILLE —   Only a couple of weeks ago the Leonard Tigers 19-16 to the S&S Consolidated Rams on a 32-yard field goal by Nico Franke in the closing seconds.

The 9-3 Tigers will get a chance at avenging that loss when the two teams meet in a football rematch at 1 p.m. Saturday at Eagle Stadium in Allen.

Last time the two teams were battling for the District 7-2A championship. This time it’ll be for the regional title in Class 2A’s Division II.

Leonard has won its two playoff games by margins of 43-36 over Edgewood and 35-21 over Blooming Grove.

S&S has beaten Alba-Golden 55-18 and Tolar 28-6 in its two playoff games. The Rams are undefeated for the season at 12-0. S&S has outscored the opponents by an average margin of 40-14.

Leonard is one of only three teams that have stayed within seven points of the Rams. Lindsay lost 21-18 and Valley View fell 28-21.

Solomon Titus led Leonard in the loss to S&S with 109 yards rushing on 21 carries and also scored on a 65-yard kickoff return.

Titus helped Leonard beat Blooming Grove by rushing for 255 yards on 22 carries, including touchdown runs of 57, 36 and 1 yard.

Leonard quarterback Justin Bennett also ran for a 17-yard touchdown and threw for a 12-yarder to Colson Coheley.

Running back Willie Winborne has been a big part of the Rams’ offense this season, rushing for more than 2,000 yards this season. Reed Collum directs the S&S offense.

The Leonard-S&S winner advances to the state quarterfinals to play either 12-0 Scurry-Rosser or 12-0 Cooper.
