VENUS, Texas —
Goldthwaite’s former state champions ended Wolfe City’s football season on Friday night, handing the Wolves a 51-7 loss in a Class A Division I area playoff game.
Goldthwaite rushed for 500 yards and eight touchdowns to up its season record to 6-5. The Eagles, who won state titles in 1985, 1993, 1994 and 2009, will advance to the regional round to face either Lindsay or Cayuga.
Wolfe City finished with a 6-6 mark that included a bi-district championship.
The Wolves scored its only touchdown on an 8-yard run by Justin Wilkinson with 7:56 remaining. The Wolves drove 61 yards in just four plays, including a pair of 11-yard runs by Wilkinson and Darrell Wooten plus a big pass interference call against Goldthwaite. Malik Gaffney booted the extra point.
Goldthwaite built a 33-0 halftime lead on the running of Logan Harper, Dakota Perry, Joseph Paddock and Rigo DelaCruz.
Goldthwaite drove 59 yards in six plays to score the game’s first touchdown on Harper’s 16-yard run. Gaffney of Wolfe City blocked the extra point kick by Brian McCasland.
The Eagles scored on their second possession, marching 80 yards in just two plays. Paddock dashed 77 yards for the touchdown with 3:37 left in the first quarter. A.J. Guerrero ran for the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.
Nathan Thomas of Goldthwaite recovered a Wolfe City fumble at the Wolves’ 31 to set up the Eagles’ next touchdown. Goldthwaite scored in four plays, including Taylor Stephens’ 3-yard run. McCasland’s kick upped Goldthwaite’s lead to 21-0.
Goldthwaite converted another Wolfe City turnover — a fumble at the Wolves’ 35 — into a 10-yard touchdown run by Perry with 10:45 left before the half. The kick failed.
Wolfe City tried a fake punt on fourth and 10 from the Wolves’ 34 but Brandon Fisk’s pass to Cody Harbin was short of the first down. Goldthwaite then drove 37 yards in four plays, topped off by DelaCruz’s 10-yard touchdown run. The kick failed.
Goldthwaite took the first possession of the second half 51 yards in seven plays. DelaCruz powered in from three yards.
Goldthwaite’s defense set up the Eagles’ next touchdown with a fumble recovery at the Wolfe City 33. This time the Eagles needed six plays to reach paydirt on Paddock’s 4-yard run that made it 45-0 with 8:35 remaining.
Goldthwaite scored its final touchdown on Paddock’s 48-yard touchdown with 4:17 left.
Wolfe City finished with 147 total yards, including 104 rushing. Wilkinson ran for 44 yards on 10 carries and Fisk added 35 yards on six carries.
