HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP

(Continued)

GREENVILLE — Ferris 28,

Quinlan Ford 0

FERRIS — The Ferris Yellowjackets stayed undefeated with a 28-0 victory over the Quinlan Ford Panthers on Friday night.

Quarterback Javaughn Thurman rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another as Ferris improved to 4-0 for the season.

Ford suffered its first loss at 3-1.

Thurman was 6-of-11 passing for 176 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown pass to Darius Rouwtt.   Thurman also connected with Cameron King on an 85-yard pass play that set up Thurman’s 3-yard touchdown run. Thurman, who rushed for 69 yards on nine carries, also ran in for a score from 16 yards.

Pleasant Grove 15,

Commerce 14

TEXARKANA — The Commerce Tigers were edged out by the Pleasant Grove Hawks 15-14 in a game marked by a slew of turnovers by both teams in the second half.

Commerce’s senior quarterback Sam Wells threw an uncharacteristic interception late in the fourth quarter that allowed Pleasant Grove run out the clock and take the one-point victory.

The Hawks received the ball to start the game and orchestrated an 8-play, 73-yard drive capped with a 25 yard touchdown run by senior running back Kayin Cooks. The extra point was wide left to make the score 6-0 Pleasant Grove.

The squads traded punts before Commerce junior receiver D’Lance Sharp took a quick out route 75 yards for a touchdown and Commerce took a 7-6 lead.

Commerce defensive back Al Jackson nabbed his first of two interceptions on the Hawks’ following possession and the Tigers engineered a 7-play, 30-yard drive capped with a 1 yard touchdown run by Wells to make it 14-6 Commerce.

Pleasant Grove answered with what would turn out to be a key drive as they took eight minutes off the clock in 14 plays and nailed a 25-yard field goal. Commerce ran the clock out after getting the ball and taking a 14-9 lead into the locker room at the half.

A clean first half by both squads turned sloppy in the second half as Wells threw an interception on the first play of the second half.  Pleasant Grove answered by fumbling on their second play with junior C.J. Davis recovering for Commerce.
