Paris freshman Tieren Gates scored two goals as the Lady Wildcats beat Greenville 2-1 in District 19-4A play on Saturday at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.
Gates put Paris up 1-0 with 32:42 left in the first half on a shot that found the left corner of the net. That 1-0 lead stood up through halftime.
Brinkley Henson tied the game for Greenville at 1-1 with a goal early in the second half. Henson used her left foot to boot the ball into the right corner of the net. It was Henson’s fourth goal in the Lady Lions’ last three games.
That 1-1 tie stood through much of the second half before Gates fired a shot from about 20 yards into the net with 2:52 left.
Greenville was unable to put a shot on goal during the remaining time.
Paris improved to 3-3-1 in district play while the Lady Lions dropped to 1-6.
“Two mental mistakes,” said Greenville coach Shelby Hale. “We’ve cut down on our mental mistakes but we’re still making them. We have the athletes and the skill but we’re still making mistakes.”
The Lady Lions will head to the road for their next two district games at North Lamar on Tuesday, Princeton on Friday.
Greenville’s junior varsity won 2-0.
