Texas A&M University-Commerce has narrowed the search down to four finalists for the position of athletic director.
On-campus interviews will begin next week for the finalists Michael Scarano (Monday), Ryan Ivey (Tuesday), Steve Cobb (Wednesday) and Tom Tallach (Thursday).
The finalists were selected from more than 50 applicants by a 13-person search committee consisting of A&M-Commerce faculty, staff, students and community representatives.
An open forum for each candidate during their interview is set from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. each day at the Sam Rayburn Student Center. A live stream of the forums will be available at LionAthletics.com and questions for the candidates can be emailed to ADSearch@tamuc.edu
Scarano has been the director of athletics at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, since 2010. Waldorf has added four new sports during Scarano’s time there including men’s hockey, women’s wrestling and men’s and women’s cross country. Scarano has 17 years of athletic administration experience, including stints as assistant athletic director at the University of California at Riverside and the University of Alabama at Huntsville.
Ivey as been an associate athletic director since Sept. 2010 at McNeese State in Lake Charles, La. Prior to his five years at McNeese State, Ivey spent two seasons as director of operations for the University of Memphis women’s basketball team and was also the Marketing and Promotions Coordinator at the University of South Dakota.
Cobb has been the director of athletics for the past 12 years at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. The Seawolves had made four appearances in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in men’s basketball and have also earned top-15 finishes in men’s and women’s cross country, skiing and track and field. Cobb was also the director of athletics for five years at Georgia Southwestern State and was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College. Cobb was assistant football coach at East Texas State in 1990-92, earning his doctorate in education from ETSU in 1993.
Tallach served as interim athletic director at A&M-Commerce from 2004-5, was an assistant AD for the Lions for six years, plus was an assistant basketball coach for the Lions from 1993-96. He earned his doctorate in education from A&M-Commerce and a master’s in health and physical education. Tallach is the assistant principal for atheltics at Loyola College Prep in Shreveport, La. He oversees an 18-sport intercollegiate athletics program as well as assisting with the education curriculum. Tallach also spent three years as director of athletics at Centenary College, also in Shreveport. He was also an assistant athletic director for two years at Tarleton State.
The goal is to provide a recommendation for the AD position to A&M-Commerce president Dr. Dan Jones before the Christmas holiday.
