Greenville Lions, Lady Lions to entertain Royse City

GREENVILLE —   Greenville will try to defend the leading scorer in the Metroplex when the Lady Lions entertain Royse City in District 13-4A basketball tonight.

  The tripleheader starts with junior varsity action at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 6:30 and the varsity boys at about 8.

  Krystal Pickron of Royse City leads all 4A scorers in the Metroplex with her average of 25.0 points per game. Pickron’s also averaging 12.3 rebounds.

  Pickron scored 34 points for the Lady Bulldogs on Friday night but they lost 63-48 to Wylie. Royse City’s next leading scorer was Lauren Dusek with six points.

  Royse City is 17-8 overall and 3-3 in district play.

  The Lady Lions are 12-9 and 2-5 after surprising Sherman 61-53 on Friday night in Greenville. Maddy Crabtree led the Lady Lions with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Elizabeth Rutherford added 14 points, Savannah Himes pitched in nine and Mackenzie Cooper added seven points, 16 rebounds and six assists.

  “Tremendous effort from everyone,” said Lady Lions coach Lesa Darst.

  The Lady Lions are taking on a Royse City team that beat them 59-45 on Dec. 11 at Royse City.   Pickron led Royse City and all scorers that night with 27 points and Dusek added 12 points. Rutherford topped Greenville with 14 points, while Crabtree scored 11 and Himes 10.

  Greenville’s Lions hope to carry the momentum of a big win over Sherman into their game against Royse City. The Lions picked up 13 points from Collen Wilburn, 10 from Dartannon Wilson and eight each from Marquis Taylor, Brady Mulkey and Jerry Dickeson during their 66-54 win over Sherman.

  “We played a complete game tonight on both ends of the floor,” said Lions coach Marcus Smith.

  The Lions are now 12-12 for the season and 1-4 in district play.

  Royse City is 4-1 in district play following a 63-47 win over Wylie. Jamie Briceno paced the Bulldogs with 18 points, while Tre Hayes added 15 and David Frye chipped in 11.

  It’s a busy night of district play for other teams around the area. Scheduled games include Caddo Mills at Sunnyvale, Leonard at Gunter, Bland at Blue Ridge, Celeste at Boles, Quitman at Lone Oak, Rains at Crandall and East Texas Christian of Tyler is at Greenville Christian School.
