28th Annual Avon Rice Relays set for today in Emory

EMORY —   The Rains Wildcats and Lady Wildcats will defend their team titles today at the 28th Annual Avon   Rice Relays at Wildcat Stadium in Emory.

  The meet is named for the late Rice, who was a longtime Rains school administrator and standout long jumper at East Texas State. It starts with the 3200-meter run at 8 a.m. today. The girls field events and boys running preliminaries will commence at 9 a.m., followed the boys field events and girls running preliminaries at 11 a.m. The running finals are planned for a 2 p.m. start.

  Teams entered include host Rains, Quinlan Ford, Sulphur Springs, Overton, Van, Canton, Clarksville, Boles, Greenville Phoenix, Grand Saline and Union Grove.

  Torie Talkington led the Rains Lady Wildcats to the team title last year by winning five events including the triple jump (32-11 1/4), long jump (16-0), 800 meters (2:27.34), 400 (1:03.37) and   4x400-meter relay (4:18.25).

  Rains finished with 213 points as Leonard was second with 94.

  Rains took the boys title last year by a 174-153 margin over Princeton.
