Vowell's team wins Ernest Hawkins Classic

WOLFE CITY —   Former Texas A&M University-Commerce head football coach Eddie Vowell helped his team to victory on Friday at the Ernest Hawkins Golf Classic at Webb Hill Country Club.

Vowell won the closest to the hole contest on No. 6 as his team finished 18-under par with a 54 for 18 holes. Joining Vowell were Steve Harp, Mike Heine and Tim Brooks.

Commerce dentist Marc McDaniel won the closest to the hole contest on No. 11 as his team, nicknamed The Doctors, wound up in second place with a 17-under 55. He was joined by Jeff Wallace, Greg Hulsey and Dustan Thrift.

Third place went to Team Mackey, led by former Lion quarterback Randy Wade, now a pro pro at the Twin Lakes Golf Course. Wade and his son Tyler Wide were joined by former Lion football players Kevin Mackey and Joe Spinato to shoot a 16-under 56.

A&M-Commerce’s new head football coach, Colby Carthel, won the contest for the longest putt made on No. 15.

Former Lion quarterback Yogi Gallegos hit the longest drive on No. 4.

The scramble attracted 64 golfers and proceeds benefitted the Lions athletic department.

The tournament is named for the winningest football coach in A&M-Commerce history. Hawkins went 132-92-6 (.587 winning percentage), winning five Lone Star Conference championships, plus the NAIA national title in 1972.

Among the players in the tournament was his grandson, Alan.
