McKinney North shuts out Lady Lions


GREENVILLE —   Celeste Verdelivo shut down Greenville on one hit as McKinney North claimed a 12-0 District 13-4A softball victory over the Lady Lions on Friday.

  Megan Shaw singled to center in the bottom of the fifth for Greenville’s only hit. Stephanie Hutchings. who reached on a fielder’s choice in the same inning, was Greenville’s only other baserunner.

  Verdelivo led the Lady Bulldogs at the plate with  three hits and four runs, while teammate Brianna Williams drove in five runs.

  ROXTON — Wolfe City’s Lady Wolves opened up a 13-0 lead in the first inning and then rolled to a 17-0 blanking of Roxton in District 15-A softball on Friday.

  Wolfe City pitcher Taylor Woodruff fired a one-hitter, striking out six.

  Woodruff, Savannah Richardson, Shelby Greenway, Haley Atwater and Laura Fenter all had two hits for Wolfe City, which is now 5-3 in district play.

  CADDO MILLS — Mary Moran fired a one-hitter as the Caddo Mills Lady Foxes blanked Farmersville 10-0 in District 12-2A softball on Friday.

  Moran struck out 12 and walked only one.

  Moran, Makenna Tallant, Jamie Maxwell, Jessica Spoonemore and Alicia Miller all tallied two hits to lead the Lady Foxes at the plate as Caddo Mills improved to 7-3 in district play.

  • Greenville Lions' coaching staff lineup changes

      Each summer the Greenville Lions’ coaching staff goes through a transition phase as some coaches move on to other schools and new coaches are hired to take their place.
      This summer is no exception. There’s changes in the coaching staffs for the boys and girls programs that’ll involve the football, volleyball, boys soccer, powerlifting and softball teams.

      His nickname in Greenville is “Pee Wee,” but Oliver Hale is a big man on the tennis court and in the kitchen.
      Hale, who is a 1971 graduate of Greenville High School, won three medals at the 2014 Transplant Games of America recently in Houston while competing in the 60-and-over age category. He won a gold medal in men’s doubles, a silver in men’s singles and a bronze in mixed doubles along with playing partner Irena Bucci.

      Guffey, who died on Saturday at the age of 50, was a standout athlete and coach, who was also an avid golfer, angler and hunter. He was an educator. teacher, mentor and a friend to many who’ve been paying their tributes online and at candlelight vigils on Sunday in Ladonia and on Monday in Campbell.  Guffey’s memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Campbell High School gymnasium, where he coached the Lady Indians’ basketball team the past 12 years.
