Fourteen runners from seven local schools have earned berths in the University Interscholastic League state cross country championships on Saturday in Round Rock.
They advanced to the state meet following their finishes at their respective regional meets on Saturday in Arlington and Humble.
Caddo Mills junior Rebecca Parsons, who’s been a state qualifier in track and field, won the Region II-2A girls two-mile run at Vandergriff Park in Arlington, clocking a time of 12 minutes 26.40 seconds.
Three other local runners finished in the top 10 in that race to earn state berths. Chelsea Brockus of Leonard was third at 12:29.99, while Lauren Laisure of Farmersville was fifth in 12:33.50 and Hanah Nichol from Lone Oak was 10th at 12:44.60. Nichol has qualified for the state cross country meet for the third time.
Runners from Cumby, Celeste and Bland earned state berths with their finishes at the Region III-A meet at Atascocita High School in Humble.
Grace Campbell of Cumby was second in the girls two-mile run at 12:49.7 and Madalyne Pearce from Celeste was eighth at 13:06.0.
Luis Osornio and Chanler Waters from Cumby finished third and fourth in the boys 5,000 meters at 17:54.5 and 17:59.4.
The Bland team of Tyler Gordon, Joseph Sourber, Matthew Johnson, Tomas Larios, Thomas Sourber and Chris Brown earned a state trip by finishing third in the boys team standings with 84 points.
The state races are scheduled for Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. The girls Class A race starts at 10 a.m., with the boys Class A race at 10:20 and the girls 2A race begins at 10:50.
