Royse City overtakes Greenville Lady Lions, 10-6

  ROYSE CITY — Royse City rallied from a 4-2 deficit to beat the Greenville Lady Lions 10-6 in District 13-4A softball on Wednesday.

  Courtney Johnson led the Lady Lions at the plate with three hits, including a home run and a double. Ali  Threndyle and Tayler Cordova both rang up two hits for Greenville.

  The Lady Lions’ effort encouraged Greenville coach Blanca Saavedra.

  “The girls have a lot more fight in them,” she said. “They’re more enthusiastic out there.”

Rockwall Heritage 10,

GCS 6

  Heritage Christian Academy won 10-6 over the Greenville Christian School Eagles on Thursday in TAPPS baseball action.

  Cameron Arnold had a run batted in and scored two runs for GCS as well as having three hits.

  Tim Allen drove in two runs and scored a run as well as getting two hits for the Eagles.

  Justin Hargrove got two hits and two runs batted in for GCS.

  Tristan Wooten and Michael Lutz each scored for the Eagles who will travel to Longview for a doubleheader on Monday.

  Nathan Weaks scored a run and had a hit for GCS.

  Weaks pitched 3 2/3 innings while Arnold pitched 3 1/3 innings for the Eagles.

Lone Oak (girls) 7,

Grand Saline 0

  LONE OAK — Mariah Nichols pitched a one-hit shutout while striking out 14 to help lead the Lone Oak Lady Buffaloes to a 7-0 win over Grand Saline on Thursday in District 14-2A softball.

  Nichols hit two doubles and a home run and drove in four runs for Lone Oak as the Lady Buffs are tied with the Commerce Lady Tigers at 9-1 in district.

  The two teams meet today in Lone Oak to determine a undisputed district leader.

Tristan Beck, Kaylee Isenburg and Becca Schumann also drove in runs against Grand Saline for Lone Oak.

  Scoring runs for Lone Oak were Nichols with three runs scored, Chelsea Rigsby two runs scored and sisters Ashley and Kaylee Isenburg.

      Each summer the Greenville Lions’ coaching staff goes through a transition phase as some coaches move on to other schools and new coaches are hired to take their place.
      This summer is no exception. There’s changes in the coaching staffs for the boys and girls programs that’ll involve the football, volleyball, boys soccer, powerlifting and softball teams.

      His nickname in Greenville is “Pee Wee,” but Oliver Hale is a big man on the tennis court and in the kitchen.
      Hale, who is a 1971 graduate of Greenville High School, won three medals at the 2014 Transplant Games of America recently in Houston while competing in the 60-and-over age category. He won a gold medal in men’s doubles, a silver in men’s singles and a bronze in mixed doubles along with playing partner Irena Bucci.

      Guffey, who died on Saturday at the age of 50, was a standout athlete and coach, who was also an avid golfer, angler and hunter. He was an educator. teacher, mentor and a friend to many who’ve been paying their tributes online and at candlelight vigils on Sunday in Ladonia and on Monday in Campbell.  Guffey’s memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Campbell High School gymnasium, where he coached the Lady Indians’ basketball team the past 12 years.
