Greenville Lions overtake Wylie Pirates

GREENVILLE —   The Greenville Lions scored three runs on two hits and a walk in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 3-2 win over the Wylie Pirates at John Mason Field Thursday in District 13-4A baseball.

  “We finally made a play when we needed to,” said Greenville coach Cody Salyers. “Chris Hazlett did a good job on the mound, keeping us in the game. We finished this one. We’ve been talking about finishing games and we finished this one. That was a total team effort.”

  The game was scoreless going to the Wylie fourth, when Joseph Ewing singled, stole second and scored on Bradley Marquez’s single. That gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

  The visitors extended their advantage to 2-0 in the fifth when Darius Carter singled, Andrew Spencer walked and then Andrew Garza singled to drive in Carter.

  Greenville saved its best for the seventh. Hazlett walked and pinch hitter Tanner Knudson singled. Austin Craig, another pinch hitter, was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Then Matthew Craig singled, scoring Hazlett. But Greenville was just getting started. Travis Koger singled to tie the game. Then   Mason Burk walked with the bases loaded on a 3-2 count to bring in the winning run.

Hazlett walked one and struck out eight to pick up the mound win as the Lions improved to 3-6 in   district play.

  Greenville won the junior varsity game, 6-4.

  The Lions return to action at John Mason Field today, entertaining Wylie East. The junior varsity game is at 4:30 p.m. followed by varsity at 7:30.

  CELESTE — Trenton’s Tigers pounded 10 hits in a 10-2 District 16-A baseball win over Celeste on Tuesday.

  Wyatt Beezley and Bailey Burks both managed three hits for the victors.

  Blake Garcia and Braden Morrow drove in runs for the Blue Devils.

  Trenton pitchers Branden Stone and Garrett Puyear combined for 11 strikeouts.
