Greenville Lions rank third at District 13-4A track and field meet

ROYSE CITY —    Carandall Hale and Hunter Smith scored some big points for the Greenville Lions on Thursday at the District 13-4A track and field meet.

   Hale won the long jump and Smith claimed second in the shot put as the Lions emerged from the field events in third place in the team standings heading into this evening’s running finals that start at 6 p.m. at Royse City ISD Stadium.

   Hale leaped 21 feet 4 1/2 inches though competing in chilly temperatures to win the long jump.

Smith improved nearly 3 1/2 feet in the shot put with a throw of 48-3 1/4 to finish second. Smith’s previous best throw was 44-10 but he topped that mark with most of his six throws. James Brown of   Royse City took the shot with a throw of 48-11 3/4.

   Smith also picked up another point in the discus with a best of 126-8 for sixth place. His teammate Austin Cooper was fourth at 129-5.

  Jerry Dickeson also tied for sixth place for the Lions in the high jump as they finished Thursday’s competition with 32 1/2 points to trail McKinney North (64) and Royse City (34) in the team standings. Lucas Lovejoy ranks fourth with 29 points, followed by Wylie (23 1/2), Sherman (16), Wylie East (11) and Denison (6).

  Connor Hudson gave the Lions a fast start on Wednesday morning with a second-place finish in the 3200-meter run. Teammate Miguel Sanchez was sixth.

  The rest of Wednesday’s schedule got pushed back to Thursday because of stormy conditions. The district’s competitors dealt with chilly temperatures on Thursday but no rain.

Mya Hudgins also gave the Lady Lions a fast start with her runner-up finish in the girls 3200-meter run on Wednesday.

  Mackenzie Cooper led the Lady Lions on Thursday with a third-place finish in the discus at 103-11. Teammates Elizabeth Rutherford (97-7) and Savannah Himes (93-1) were fifth and sixth.

Himes was fifth in the girls shot put at 33-7 1/2 and Cooper finished sixth with a 33-4 1/2 throw. Both throws were personal bests for the two Lady Lions.

  The Lady Lions rank fifth in the team standings with 22 points, trailing McKinney North (56), Lucas Lovejoy (53), Wylie (40) and Royse City (23).

  Krystal Pickron gave Royse City’s Lady Bulldogs a big lift with a victory in the long jump (17-1/2).   Britany Smith of Greenville was fifth in that event.

  Ashley Hoskins of Greenville won the junior varsity shot put (30-5 1/4) and was fourth in the JV discus (74-3), while teammate Jordan Sweat was second in the shot put (29-11 1/2) and won the discus (82-3).

  Elcherri Neal, who was a regional qualifier in the 100-meter dash last year, turned in the fourth-best qualifying time in the girls 100-meter dash at 12.97 seconds.

  Erik Quiroz of Greenville qualified with the fifth-fastest 200 (23.17) and sixth fastest 400 (52.72).

Britany Smith ran the sixth-fastest 200 (26.56).

  “I was happy with the way everybody was competing today,” said Greenville coach Brandon Couts. “People were fighting for positions and for points.”

  The top four finishers in each event will advance to the area meet on April 18 in Royse City.
