Greenville entertains Wylie tonight

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

GREENVILLE —   The Greenville Lions and Lady Lions will try to shake off losses on Friday night to Lucas Lovejoy as they entertain Wylie in District 13-4A basketball tonight.

  The junior varsity boys tip off first at 5 p.m. in the Lions Den at Greenville High School, followed by the varsity girls at about 6:30 and the varsity boys at about eight. The Greenville Middle School gym will be the site for junior varsity girls and freshman girls and boys games, starting at 5.

  Greenville’s Lions are 12-13 for the season and 2-5 in district play following their 65-54 loss at Lovejoy.

  Greenville coach Marcus Smith said the Lions played hard and were aggressive but lost 20 turnovers.

  “We are more aggressive and play more as a team,” he said.

  Dartannon Wilson led the Lions with 14 points, while Darion Neal was next with eight.

  Wylie is 5-18 for the season and 3-4 in district play following a 59-49 win over crosstown rival Wylie East on Friday. Jacoby Armstrong led the victorious Pirates with 23 points and Travonta Maddox pitched in 15.

  Wylie won the first matchup with the Lions, 65-48 at Wylie on Dec. 18. Myron Varmall led the Pirates in that game with 15 points and Armstrong finished with 13. Wilson and Collen Wilburn both led the Lions with 17 points.

  The Lady Lions are 12-11 and 2-7 following their 53-21 loss at Lucas Lovejoy.

  “They played tough defense on us,” said Greenville coach Lesa Darst.

  Arian Alford led the Lady Lions with seven points and Mackenzie Cooper finished with eight rebounds.

  Wylie’s Lady Pirates are 9-17 overall and 6-3 in district play after beating Wylie East 52-47 on Friday. Kennedi Foreman paced Wylie in that game with 23 points and Colby Davis added 13.

  Wylie downed the Lady Lions 59-29 at Wylie on Dec. 18. Foreman topped Wylie in that game with 19 points and Davis added 16. Elizabeth Rutherford led the Lady Lions with nine points and Savannah Himes added eight.

  Most of the other teams around the area are in action tonight in district play. Key games include Celeste at Cumby, Kaufman at Rains, Wills Point at Quinlan Ford, Fruitvale at Campbell, Trenton at Bland, Pilot Point at Leonard and Kaufman at Rains.

  Rains’ 6-6 senior Klara Bradshaw produced a triple-double during the Ladycats’ 41-33 home win over Kaufman on Friday. Bradshaw had 20 points, 16 rebounds and 17 blocked shots to go with three assists and three steals. Cortney Anderson added seven points for Rains in that game and Carley Hill chipped in six points.

      Each summer the Greenville Lions’ coaching staff goes through a transition phase as some coaches move on to other schools and new coaches are hired to take their place.
      This summer is no exception. There’s changes in the coaching staffs for the boys and girls programs that’ll involve the football, volleyball, boys soccer, powerlifting and softball teams.

      His nickname in Greenville is “Pee Wee,” but Oliver Hale is a big man on the tennis court and in the kitchen.
      Hale, who is a 1971 graduate of Greenville High School, won three medals at the 2014 Transplant Games of America recently in Houston while competing in the 60-and-over age category. He won a gold medal in men’s doubles, a silver in men’s singles and a bronze in mixed doubles along with playing partner Irena Bucci.

      Guffey, who died on Saturday at the age of 50, was a standout athlete and coach, who was also an avid golfer, angler and hunter. He was an educator. teacher, mentor and a friend to many who’ve been paying their tributes online and at candlelight vigils on Sunday in Ladonia and on Monday in Campbell.  Guffey’s memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Campbell High School gymnasium, where he coached the Lady Indians’ basketball team the past 12 years.
