William Strickland fired a 78 to lead the Greenville Lions to second place in Monday’s opening round of the District 13-4A golf tournament at Hurricane Creek Country Club.
The Lions carded a 337 team score to trail only McKinney North (323) in the battle for two spots in the Region II-4A tournament. The final round is set for today.
“We’ve just got to hang in there,” said Lions coach Don Johnson. “Last year we missed it by two strokes. We had some good play all day.”
David Weaks was next for the Lions with an 82, followed by Jakob Ross (84), Jonathan DeGarso (93) and Austin Heatherly (110). Cody LaBove, shooting as a medalist, fired a 102.
Wylie ranks third at 341, followed by Sherman (344), Lucas Lovejoy (346), Wylie East (363), Royse City (366) and Denison (369).
Emily McGee led the Lady Lions at 136. Alli Ozarowski shot a 137, Lauren McManus a 145 and Rebekah White a 145.
The Lady Lions are in seventh place with a 563. Wylie East leads McKinney North by four shots with a 384. Royse City ranks fifth at 453.
The first Lion tees off at 8 a.m. today, while the first Lady Lion is to tee off at 8:30.
