GREENVILLE —   The Greenville Lady Lions won their home opener in basketball 65-41 over the Bonham Lady Purple Warriors at the Lions Den Tuesday.

Elizabeth Rutherford pumped in 18 points and Arian Alford fired in 15 points to lead Greenville. Maddy Crabtree tallied 12 and Mackenzie Cooper added 10 in the Greenville win.

“I was very proud of our girls tonight,” said Greenville coach Lesa Darst. “It took us a while to get warmed up. We need to be more consistent. With eight players on our team we need to continue to focus on functioning defensively as one unit.”

The Lady Lions started quickly, scoring the first 10 points as Cooper, Crabtree and Alford all scored baskets. Cooper had a 3-pointer.

Bonham answered with six straight points on baskets by Madeline Dolberry, Kayla Sanmann and Kala Simpson.

The Lady Lions ended the first quarter on a 9-5 run to grab a 19-11 lead.

Bonham outscoreed the Lady Lions 17-15 in the second quarter as the Lady Lions went into halftime ahead 34-28.

Greenville’s lead climbed to 48-36 after three quarters.

The Lady Lions put Bonham away with a 17-5 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Dolberry led Bonham with 15 points and Simpson added eight.

Greenville will return to action Thursday in the Quinlan Ford tournament, facing Ferris at 9:50 a.m. and then host Ford at 12:40 p.m.
