Luper helps Sherman beat Greenville in Lions' season finale

GREENVILLE — Leonard 36,

S&S Consolidated 26

SADLER — Dylan Monck rushed for 134 yards to lead the Leonard Tigers to a 36-26 over S&S Consolidated Friday night, and secure a playoff spot with a 4-1 record.

Leonard opened the scoring when Ryan Nixon capped a 51-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge. Ty McKinney converted the point-after to give Tigers a 7-0 lead.

S&S answered with a 63-yard touchdown run by Willie Winborne. The point-after failed, and Leonard maintained the lead, 7-6.

The Rams’ Winborne next scored on a 1-yard run. The two-point conversion failed, and S&S led 12-7.

The Tigers then put together a 70-yard drive culminating with a 3-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion run both by Blake Hicks. Leonard led 15-12 at intermission.

Monck then ground out yards on a Leonard 63-yard scoring drive. Hicks lofted a 6-yard touchdown pass to Tyler “Turbo” Turner to complete the drive. McKinney’s kick gave Leonard a 22-12 lead in the middle of the third period.

Two minutes later, the Rams’ Winborne sprinted in from 39 yards out. A successful kick narrowed the margin to three points.

Hicks connected with his brother Brent on a 9-yard scoring pass. McKinney’s kick gave Leonard a 29-19 lead.

Drew Dutton was on the receiving end of a 27-yard touchdown pass for the Rams. This brought the score to 29-26.

The Tigers finalized the scoring on a Nixon 12-yard run. McKinney’s extra-point made the score 36-26.

Leonard, now 7-2-1, will play Cooper in a bi-district playoff Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Commerce.

Leverett’s Chapel 62,

Campbell 0

CAMPBELL — Leverett’s Chapel blanked Campbell 62-0 Friday night to close out the first year of six-man football for the Indians in District 15-A.

Shon Rios had two catches for 14 yards for Campbell, and the team’ only senior, Scotty Green, had a kickoff return for 69 yards.

Rios was credited with four tackles and Billy Rios with three.

Campbell went 2-8 on the season.

Leverett’s Chapel is 8-2 on the season.

“Overall it has been a great year,” said Campbell coach Colby Smith. “I am proud to say that I had the privilege to coach a great group of young men. We had some trials and tribulations along the way, but progression was made every week and that is the exact formula to follow to build a solid program. Our boys have laid the tracks in the right direction for our program to build upon in the years to come.”
