Area teams getting ready for tournament play

Sixteen teams will begin competition today in the Quinlan Ford Roundball Roundup girls tournament while Campbell plays host to eight boys and eight girls teams for the Sixth Annual Glen Fields tournament.

Greenville’s Lady Lions are among the teams vying for the title at Quinlan. The Lady Lions are off to a 2-0 start after downing Sulphur Springs, 47-39, and Commerce, 63-23.

Senior Olivia Carter, a first-team all-District 10-4A selection last season for the Lady Lions, is averaging 21 points per game after pumping in 26 points against Commerce and 16 against Sulphur Springs.

Freshman Maddy Crabtree is averaging 16 points per game for the Lady Lions, including 19 versus Commerce and 13 in her varsity debut against Sulphur Springs.

Greenville will open the tournament at 11 a.m. against Class 3A Bonham.

Host Quinlan Ford, coached by Phil Kempson, opens the tournament at 2 p.m. against Grand Saline.

Celeste, which is 2-1 after beating Fannindel 56-38 on Tuesday night, opens the tournament at 3:30 p.m.

Lone Oak, which downed Hawkins 49-41 on Tuesday night, takes on Edgewood at 12:30.

Other teams in the tournament include Ferris, Community, Leonard, Eustace, Sam Rayburn, Van Alstyne, Crandall and Tom Bean.

Bland’s No. 9 state-ranked Tigers are one of the teams to watch in the Glen Fields tournament, which is named for a former state championship basketball coach at Fannindel who was also a school administrator in Campbell. Bland, which opened the season with a 47-45 victory over Whitewright in the season opener on Tuesday night, takes on Ector at 5 p.m.

Campbell’s Indians, who lost their opener to Dodd City 71-57 on Tuesday night, will open at 8 p.m. against Blue Ridge.

Other boys teams include Detroit, the Commerce junior varsity, Honey Grove and Trenton.

Honey Grove’s girls will begin defense of their Glen Fields title at 6:30 p.m. against Trenton.

Campbell’s Lady Indians, who are 2-0 after whipping Dodd City 54-16 on Tuesday night, will take on Blue Ridge at 6:30.

Bland’s Lady Tigers, who dropped a 40-35 decision to Canyon Creek on Tuesday night, will face Ector at 3:30 p.m.

Detroit and Bells will play in another girls first-round game at 3:30 p.m.

The Campbell tournament continues daily through Saturday, with the girls championship game at 6:30 and the boys finals at 8.

The championship game in the Quinlan tournament is set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
